PEKITI TIRSIA KALI

Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje is our Grandmaster and Upholder of our Pekiti Tirsia Kali system! Officially founded in 1897 by his grandfather, Grand Master Conrado Tortal, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is an indigenous -method of combat from the Visayan region of the Philippines. Pekiti-Tirsia was reserved in secret as a family system to defend the Tortal land until the art was brought to the U.S. in 1972 by Grand Tuhon. Since then, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali has expanded worldwide and influenced the creation of dozens of off-shoot combat systems.

He is one of the greatest living Grandmasters of the Filipino martial arts. Widely known for his mastery of bladed weapons, Grand Tuhon serves as a Senior Advisor to the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police, training them in Close-Quarters-Combat utilizing the effective and sophisticated techniques of the Pekiti-Tirsia System of Kali.

Today, Gaje still continues to teach his art of Pekiti Tirsia to students of martial arts, personal security, law enforcement and militaries worldwide. He has been featured on the covers of several top martial arts magazines. He is a member of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Karate Hall of Fame.

Gaje has trained notable martial artists such as Dan Inosanto, Eddie Jafri, Tom Bisio, Erwin BallartaManuel Taningco, William McGrath, Philip Gelinas, and Greg Alland. Inosanto said about Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, "In the field of strategic knife defense, the Pekiti-Tirsia System of Kali is one of the most progressive, practical and sophisticated systems of tactical knife self-defense and edged weapon awareness that I have encountered."

Gaje, Inosanto, and Jafri were responsible for the creation of a fusion martial art that incorporated the styles of the PhilippinesMalaysia, and Indonesia. Inosanto later coined the term Maphilindo to represent the style's origin and founded Maphilindo Silat.

Because Grand Tuhon is always teaching and training, he has developed a vital and dynamic system of Filipino martial arts that derives its vitality from its indigenous roots and its effectiveness from a constant process of review, revision and improvement. Modern weapons and techniques, as well as traditional ones, is at the heart of his teaching.

Grand Tuhon Leo T. Gaje

"The influence of Kali is deeply rooted in the Filipino Culture and expresses the belief in life not death, the belief in success not failure, and the belief in health not sickness."
